Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important factor in local search. It's the box that shows up on the right side of Google with your hours, reviews, photos, and contact info.
Do this today:
- Claim and verify your profile at business.google.com
- Fill out every single field — hours, services, description, attributes
- Add at least 10 high-quality photos
- Post updates weekly (Google treats this like fresh content)
- Respond to every review — good and bad
2. Your Website (The Foundation)
Your GBP gets you into the map pack. Your website gets you into the organic results below it. Together, they dominate the page.
What your website needs for local SEO:
- Title tags with your city and service. "Emergency Plumbing in Houston | ABC Plumbing" — not just "Home | ABC Plumbing"
- A dedicated page for each service. Don't cram everything onto one page. Google ranks pages, not websites.
- Your name, address, and phone number (NAP) on every page. Consistency is critical — it should match your GBP exactly.
- Schema markup. This is code that tells Google exactly what your business is, where it is, and what it does. Most website builders don't do this. Custom-built sites should.
- Fast load times. Google has confirmed page speed is a ranking factor. If your site takes 5 seconds to load on mobile, you're losing positions.
- Mobile-first design. Over 60% of local searches happen on phones. If your site isn't built for mobile, Google knows — and penalizes you for it.
3. Reviews and Citations
Reviews are the third pillar. Businesses with more (and better) reviews rank higher in local search. Period.
- Ask every happy customer for a Google review
- Make it easy — send them a direct link
- Respond to every review within 24 hours
Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number on other websites (Yelp, BBB, industry directories). The more consistent citations you have, the more Google trusts your business is real and legitimate.
Common Mistakes That Kill Your Rankings
- Inconsistent NAP. If your address is "123 Main St" on Google and "123 Main Street" on Yelp, that hurts you. Standardize everything.
- No website, or a terrible one. A Wix site from 2019 with a 35 PageSpeed score is worse than no site at all — it tells Google your business doesn't care.
- Ignoring reviews. Not responding to reviews (especially negative ones) signals to both Google and potential customers that you're checked out.
- Keyword stuffing. Writing "best plumber Houston best plumber in Houston TX plumber" on your homepage doesn't work. It did in 2010. Now it gets you penalized.
- No mobile optimization. If someone has to pinch and zoom to read your site on their phone, they're leaving. And Google notices.
